Richard G. Gammans
Richard Gammans was born June 17, 1924 and attended the St. Joan of Arc school and later Kokomo High school. He was placed in the 4-F classification in the Selective Service registration, but persisted in his effort to get into the army. He was rejected a second time, because of being underweight. He tried a third time and by stuffing himself with bananas an drinking huge quanties of water he was able to get his weight up enough to pass examination.
Pfc. Gammans entered service July 22, 1944, and took his basic training in Camp Hood, Tex. From there he was sent to Fort Meade, Md., and thence overseas.
The boat on which he went across was sunk but he was rescued and later assigned to an armored section of the Third Army. He saw action as an infantry soldier riding the tanks of Patton's Army.
