He was killed in a German ambush along with 11 other members of the 86th Calvary Recon (Mech) at Chateauneuf de Faou on 5 August 1944. There is a memorial of the 12 killed during the ambush erected by the town. He was given a Purple Heart 16 Dec 1944.
