Albert G. Hausle

Albert G. Hausle was born on January 31, 1924, to Rose and Carl Hausle in Custer, South Dakota.  Rose later passed away.  Mr. Hausle was known as “Hi” and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1942.  He worked in a defense plant in Seattle, Washington before entering the service.  He was an ASTP student at the University of Alabama before the program was discontinued.

Pfc. Hausle entered the war on May 2, 1943, at Fort Lewis, Washington.  He was then stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.  He went overseas with the 44th Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division in September of 1944.  Pfc. Hausle was reported missing, but later, word was received that he was killed in action on February 8, 1945.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.  A letter to Pfc. Hausle’s father from Edward F. Witsell, Major General, Acting the Adjutant General of the Army stated:
"It is with profound regret that I confirm the recent telegram informing you of the death of your son, Private First Class Albert G. Hausle, who was previously reported missing in action on 8 February 1945 in Germany. An official message has now been received which states that he was killed in action on the date he was previously reported missing in action…
I realize the anxiety you have suffered since he was first reported missing in action and deeply regret the sorrow this later report brings you.  May the knowledge that he made the supreme sacrifice for his home and country be a source of sustaining comfort.  My sympathy is with you in this time of great sorrow".

Pfc. Hausle is buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.  At the time of his death, he was survived by his father; two sisters, Mrs. Q.H. Wong of Rapid City and Mrs. Alice Rasmussen of Los Angeles, California; and one brother, Carl M. Hausle of Seattle, Washington.
